Kukui Nut Oil

Kukui nut oil is derived from the nuts of the kukui or Aleurites moluccanus tree. This tree is native to tropical forests of Southeast Asia, Indonesia and Pacific Islands. The kukui tree has large green leaves and can grow up to 80 feet tall. The fruit from Aleurites moluccanus is about the size and shape of walnut, and this fruit contains oil rich nuts known as kukui nut oil.

Traditional Use & History

The kukui tree is the state tree of Hawaii and has a long history of traditional use. The oil from the nuts is used to treat skin rashes, burns and wounds. In addition, Hawaiians historically used bark from the tree to create canoes, the nuts and leaves to create traditional leis, and the oil to coat fishing nets and light candles. With such a variety of uses, it's easy to see why this tree holds an important place in Hawaiian culture.
